An engaged team is a happy team! Some top tips from our People expert

As staff shortages continue to hit our beloved industry around the world, now more than ever it is absolutely key that hospitality management teams are not just worrying about the next hire...but more importantly...how to keep your existing team happy!

We asked our resident People expert Julie Delion for her top tips to keep your staff motivated and engaged:

  • Make every decision with your team in mind. Ask yourself, would the team get onboard? Does this benefit them? Would this make their life easier? If the answer is no to any of these questions, don’t do it!

  • Don’t assume you know what your team wants. Before spending tons of money on some employee scheme, discount system or gym membership, ask them!

  • Never miss an opportunity to recognise great work! If a team member does something good, tell them! If you don’t tell them, they might stop doing it.

  • Deliver feedback, all day, every day...but only use constructive and positive feedback. Negative feedback is never helpful!

  • If someone on your team is not performing - coach them or dismiss them. Identifying under-performance is one thing, but acting on it quickly is absolutely key. It's easy to spend too much time on low performers, where instead you should focus on developing and retaining your superstars instead.

  • Keep everyone in your team learning constantly

  • Delegate! It will help you and help your team. Small tasks or responsibilities keep your team learning and engaged.
