Recruitment - A few things to keep in mind...
'Recruitment' has almost become a dirty word in the hospitality industry, especially in the UK, since BREXIT and COVID decimated the candidate pool.
We know that most business owners and hiring managers are fed up of talking about the challenges they invariably face when looking to hire! We also know that there are already a number of articles/blogs/podcasts out there offering solutions and advice on how to approach recruitment in this market...BUT...we have some thoughts of our own we are keen to share!
Our team has a wealth of experience in developing recruitment best practice and hiring strategies in a variety of different business shapes and sizes, with real strength in the fast-casual/QSR space. Here are a few of our top tips:
Conduct a full review of your recruitment process prior to going to market. It is critical that once you get going, you know you can trust the process in place, operate at pace and ensure no talent is lost from the funnel at any stage.
It is better to be short staffed than have the wrong employee onboard. Whilst there is often time-pressures associated with recruitment, never hire someone for the sake of hiring someone...make sure they are right for the job you want them to do.
Use a recruitment process as an opportunity to review your existing operations. Are you able to operate with a smaller core of expert hires? Are there internal resources you can allocate differently? Now is the time to see whether your business can operate in a more profitable way!
Always do a structured trial shift. You would never buy a pair of jeans without trying them on first!
Keep in mind that recruitment is a two way street. Make your brand appealing to a potential candidate. Why would they want to come and work for you instead of somewhere else? And don't forget...candidates are also potential customers!
Make their first day fun and engaging. No one wants to spend 8 hours washing dishes on their first day. Ensure they have time to settle, meet the team and learn about your company first.
These are just a few things to consider when bringing onboard your next superstar, or whole new team as your business looks to grow! We pride ourselves on collaborating with our customers to develop robust and meaningful 'people journeys' that covers both recruitment and retention/engagement, and we would love to hear from you if this is of particular interest...
